Why Building a Computer is Very Cost Effective and Not as Difficult as it Sounds
Last year I was in the market for a new desktop computer. I tend to do a lot of research when I am about to make a large purchase and this was definitely in that category. During that quality R&D I came across the following idea over and over: “building a computer is more cost effective than buying one.” Initially, I disregarded it thinking there’s no way I’d be able to figure out how to actually build a computer… that stuff is reserved for rocket scientists right!?
So, I continued looking for the perfect desktop with all the specs that I wanted. Fast processor, lots of RAM, tons of storage, great graphics card, and all of the next gen tech I could find. Yet, it almost seemed impossible to find what I wanted and within my budget. The size of my budget was decent, I could spend over a grand to get the best top of the line computer. The unfortunate news I was discovering, however, was that the desktop with all the bells and whistles that I was dreaming of really cost double to triple what I was willing to spend.
The price shock had me thinking, “Well… maybe it’s not totally ludicrous to try to build my own computer.” So, I went back to my newfound favorite hobby where I gleefully endured numerous hours of research on the topic! Is this going to be a really difficult task to complete? The result of this research was that building a computer is not only feasible, it is practically on the same skill level as building a Lego set.

Now, how much money would I actually save over that super expensive desktop if I actually build one with the same or similar specs? I found an excellent resource in https://pcpartpicker.com/. That site makes it extremely easy to map out what parts you are planning on using as well as how much the total cost would be for your project. I went about selecting parts that would produce a similar product to some of the best computers on the market. I can tell you that I was extremely pleased to discover I could potentially build a nearly identical, if not better, version of those desktops for a fraction of the price.
At this point I had carefully chosen each and every component that would go into my computer build. I began ordering all my parts and I was able to get tons more in savings just by shopping around different online stores. All in all I spent $1,400 on an excellent desktop computer which I am still in love with a year later. I’m fairly certain a computer of that quality would cost $1,500 – $2,500 range, which is a huge amount of savings. In fact, doing a quick google search of what’s available with similar base specs, the prices start at $1,600+. That’s after a years time with better technology becoming more and more affordable. It seemed the general consensus about saving money through building a computer over buying one was absolutely spot on. Thanks internet!
